Patrick Pearse was one of the founding members of the Irish Volunteers and Commander in Chief of the Irish forces. He was among the rebel leaders who took over the G. P. O. during the 1916 Easter Rising where he read the Proclamation of the Republic, marking the beginning of the 1916 Rising.
